Nian Gao

Nian Gao in Chinese and “Nyonya kueh bakul” in Malay refers to a traditional steamed glutinous rice cake commonly eaten during the Chinese New Year. This sweet, sticky cake is made with coconut milk and considered a “New Year cake” due to its symbolic meaning of increasing prosperity with each passing year. Alice’s version used a friend’s 37 year old recipe which she adapted to create a new recipe. It is moist, creamy, and mixed with chopped dried pineapple and cranberries. The top is layered with sweeten coconut flakes and coconut sugar.

Nuts and pandan versions are available. Please consult Alice for more information.
